what if:

woman = anyone who posts pictures online
man = anyone who enjoys said pictures

is this all about desire?

Great question!

I'm no logic master but both statements above, Madame de Staël's, and your own subbed in terms, seem to be examples of circular reasoning.

My thought concerning your question is "No"

I believe there are a myriad of reasons why any human being posts photos online of themselves of a sensual nature. It's not always that a person posting images of themselves does so to be desired, As well, it's not always a person viewing those images seeks to desire the focus of that photo.

I'm thinking bloggers, such as yourself, use the photo content you post, along with what you surround it with, as an outlet for your creativity. (In fact, I think you written that here somewhere before.) I.E. To explore issues connected to human sexuality and behavior. Also, to connect with others of like mind. Possibly to grab hold of a sense of your place in the world. Or to experience acceptance and hopefully, to comprehend what makes us different and the same.

Vice versa, those of us viewing your content here, likely we mirror the focus of those reasons.

My own experience is I enjoy the freedom of thought I find here. Your photos run the gamut from sexy, to beautiful, to thought provoking. Usually, it's all three at once.
Also, I find the literate text you post to be, on average, work I am unfamiliar with. Therefore, I enjoy the formation of new synapses created as I consider what you've placed on my reader's viewing plate.

I hope I've made a little bit of sense?

I agree. It's a grand simplification of the reasons that anyone interacts online. But it's a common idea and there is a grain of truth at the bottom of it, I think.

No, I don't think it's all about desire, and I definitely don't think that desire can be so simply split between 'man' and 'woman' (in short: I agree with you!)

This is an expertly set and taken picture - clever use of focus and angle drawing the gaze.

I definitely don’t agree with the gendered nature of the quote and even the desire aspect is very binary thinking. Yes there are times we want to feel desired but also there are times we just want to explore who we are.
